Children's Day Celebration 2008
Happy faces.
Lucky draw prizes..
what's in the goodie bags?
after all the gifts..
it's balloon time.
We celebrated Children's Day today. As usual, had food and drinks and lucky draw. The children played Captains' Ball too.. Not around for that, so someone please update on that part..
Food is always the favourite of the children. We had pizzas, chicken wings, fries, tidbits and drinks for them. I guess everyone enjoyed the food, especially Darelton and Wen Xin.. they sure can eat.. Ivan didn't eat or drink anything.. but other than him.. everyone else ate, including Kelly and Sheila. They took some time to start, but at least they finished their food..
Next, we gave out the goodie bags and the lucky draw prizes.. after the sec 2 picked their lucky numbers, we let the rest pick from the youngest to the oldest.. As long as there's gifts and wrapped, I guess the kids were happy.. Though I'm not too sure how useful the assortment of gifts that we gave out were, but guess, as long as there's a gift, they'll be happy.. at least at that moment.. as some gifts might be too girlie or too childish for some of them.. but well, since we dun really get to choose the prizes that is available, they'll have to make do with it.. if not suitable for them then they can give it to someone who has better use for the gift.. make someone else happy mah.. haha.. =)

Trip to the Southern Ridge
To: All Volunteers
From: Zhi Hao
Date: September 16, 2008
Re: Volunteer Outing
Thanks for taking the time to look through the upcoming outing on the 5th Oct, a Sunday morning.
I. OVERVIEW
Since we shall be having an outing soon, I propose that we have use this outing as an opportunity to foster a healthy lifestyle spirit among the volunteer. Thus a walk/trek at the Southern Ridges would be an ideal activity for all the volunteers..
II. LOCATION
This southern portion of the island loop (also known as the Southern ridges) spans a total distance of 9km from Mt Faber via Harbour Front and ending at West Coast Park. The whole 9km route will see you from Harbour Front MRT- Mount Faber Hill- Henderson Waves- Telok Blangah Hill- Alexandra Arch- Hortpark- Kent Ridge- Clementi Woods and finally, West Coast Park. However, we will only be covering the section from the starting point Habourfront till Hort Park, which will be our destination.
Total Distance: 5.5 km
Estimated time: 1 hr 20 mins
III. OBJECTIVES
Firstly, this activity can provide a chance for all the volunteers to relax and slow down their pace of life. It would be very helpful for most of our volunteers as many of us are engage in very stressful conditions during our daily working life.
Secondly, the walk also provides a medium for all the volunteers to communicate and interact with each other. Thus we would be able gain a better understanding of each other and increase the teamwork capabilities of the volunteers in the future.
IV. TIMING
The plan is for this outing to be held on the 5th Oct, is to allow you to prepare your schedule so that you could free on this day. It will be a morning activity as the scenery would be better viewed during that period of the day and it would give us the opportunity to take a breath of the morning fresh air.
V. COST & TRANSPOTATION
Technically, if no transport is provided, there would be zero cost. I hope that it would be possible for most the volunteers could make their way down to Habourfront mrt as a meeting area, since most of us live near Hougang NEL mrt station. The meeting point would be at Haborfront mrt, before we proceed to the starting point.
However, if it was to be held on a Sun morning, I would strongly advice the volunteers to bring their own water to hydrate themselves, there will also be water coolers on the way.

Lantern making competition
Taken with my new camera. A lot of blur images as I'm still trying it out.. these are the few clearer pics.. enjoy..
Group A with their many ideas...
Group B hard at work..
Group C with the serious Weikang..
Group D working on their rocket..
The winner, Group B (again)
The children are still not quite ready for creative work.. think we need to give them more guidance next time.. but at least we do see some different lanterns..
I missed the chance to have a debrief with the kids.. so mayb I'll just post my comments here..
Group A: dunno whether to laugh or cry.. I did both by the way.. they used up quite a few materials but nothing turned out quite like it n they end up having the simple 'cup with string' lantern, this is the group which didn't plan... sigh.. or rather dunno how to plan.. no teamwork..
Group B: Winning group, slightly more teamwork.. quite focused on what they were doing.. creative use of materials but actually doesn't quite fit my criterior of a lantern, which is supposed to be translucent/ transparent with space for candle/ bulb.
Group C: Weikang was v serious when doing his lantern, with the drawing etc, but too bad, they didn't have the teamwork n being disturbed by dear Darelton plus other factors, the lantern wasn't finish n I got to help to finish it for them.. actually I saw them all doing things.. but seems like they didn't know what they were doing.. or did they know but got no time to finish? cos of our limited time n not so gd quality glue?
Group D: Actually I like the lantern that they made.. but I must say this is the group with the most help.. cos we gave them a lot of ideas n helped to coordinate for them.. so the finished pdt actually did fit my criterior of the lantern, they did problem solving as they do think of ways to have the space for candle, did some decoration, has a theme, uses recycled materials etc.. Not much teamwork from this team too but at least they managed to finish the lantern within the limited time.. I think next time for whatever activity, we need a volunteer at each team to help facilitate n not leave it to them to coordinate themselves...

Mooncake festival lantern making contest
Dear all, as discussed we'll have a lantern making competition for the kids next week. They'll be making lanterns out of recycled materials and everyone pls help to bring along some materials for them. We'll most probably divide whatever we have into 4 or 5 bags, n they will work in their grps to complete a lantern using the materials we provide. The materials need not be the same, so depends on their luck in getting the materials. With different materials then we'll see different lanterns too, if not we'll see similar lanterns, which will be a waste to their creativity.. =)
So the list of things as far as I remember is as below:
1) newspapers (centre have)
2) magazines (centre have)
3) tissue boxes
4) toilet rolls
5) wires (I have, but pls remind me to bring on thurs, via sms.. haha)
6) plastic bottles, bowls, containers (big and/ or small)
7) empty drink cans
8) scrap cloths
9)CDs which are of no use anymore
10)string/ thread
11) cardboards
12) scissors, penknives (huiyi pls remember to bring back the scissors)
any other scrap materials which u have and u think are useful, please bring them along too. Do let us know what u'll be bringing so that we'll not all bring the same things.. maybe volunteers shd form a grp to make a lantern too if u've got nothing to do.. haha.. I'm excused though, since I'm the 'organiser'.. but we all have to be squeezed in that room???
