Hey all, in the mist of discussing the volleyball championship, i shall do a quick update of last sat gathering which comprises only me, wei yu and hui yi :(

Last sat, after SHG, we went for dinner. Discuss a lot, talk a lot and crap a lot. As we wanted to watch the Red Cliff but realise that its a sat evening (possibility oof no tickets), we went to wei yu's house to check out availability. And as predicted, NO TICKETS. So, conclusion was to go shopping. haha

WANG WANG!

So we went to the cathy and Plaza sing and later on to centrepoint for ice dream!!

This coming sat, 2/8/2008 will be another dinner gathering!!!!!!!!

Those who can make it pls try to attend. But venue not yet decided because must see hui yi have what discount vouchers. HAHA

PS Lets set a rule here. all are to leave your initials after every posts so that we know who wrote it. something might just happen to those unidentified posts.

SHG Volleyball Championship

Dear Weiyu,

in view of your complex maths question........

The matches that the kids have to play to make it fair.......
1) Team A vs Team B
2) Team A vs Team C
3) Team A vs Team D
4) Team A vs Team C
5) Team C vs Team D

My feel is that Team A will "die" if need to play 5 straight games. Haha!! :-0
Why you all "te-gan" Team B by asking them to play 4 straight games last sat??

The other suggestion is to start officially next week by playing proper schedule... hehee!!

Saturday, wake up late therefore was a little bit late for SHG. Given some maths paper for my sec 2/youth volunteer to do but do not really see their basic in maths. (Maybe is my paper too hard for them already ba cause I give them the first few question of ‘O’ level paper 1) After all, I see their improvement lesson after lesson, as from do not know, do not understand, to blur & confuse, to can answer my question and the paper. GOOD EFFORT! Lets work harder in order to reach our GOAL, SEC 2. COME ON! WE CAN DO IT!

Volley competition is well hold by jia jin, as most of the kids enjoy their game + THE FINAL WILL BE HELD NEXT Saturday! So who will be the champion for volley ball competition?

In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minster Cao Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister, himself. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating in the battle of Red Cliff (RED CLIFF should be in the color of red :P). During the battle, two thousand ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed forever.

Kathy and I are going to watch RED CLIFF on 30.7.08 (WED), timing from morning all the way to 6pm in order to watch it only at $6. HAHA! (Student price) Is an old show already but heard from the reviews given by our peer that is a good movie and is worth watching. SO ANYBODY INTERESTED TO JOIN US FOR A MOIVE ON NEXT WED? PLS CONTACT KATHY!!! ON TOP OF IT, IF ANYONE WANTS DINNER OR SHOPPING AFTER SHG NEXT SAT CAN ALSO CONTACT KATHY! HAHA!

Another walk down memory lane...

Since we are into memory lanes.. let me contribute too.. to confirm the fact that I'm a regular here.. haha..
but then.. what should I say or rather write?
I don't even remember the exact year which we started to volunteer... haha.. 2.5 yrs ago? These few years, half the volunteers have changed.. changed to a younger batch.. haha.. we are the ones increasing the average age of our volunteers. =p the children have changed to a more enthusiastic and noisier batch, actually I like it better now.. too quiet is not that fun.. at least when we have activities, they seem to be enjoying it better.. =)personally, I've gone from S to M, if u understand.. =) no photos to contribute as my photos always get stuck somewhere...

Propose

Objective of the camp are to ensure the kids will enjoy themselves after their examination and at the same time learn or pick up some skill in order to be more independent.

- Having a own SHG camp/ chalet(if can get) in next outing

- 2 days 1 night camp that mostly held in the beach

- Total about 25 kids + volunteers

- Have at least one 10 men tent or two to three 4 men tent for the kids, as do not think that volunteer are going to sleep in the night. HAHA. Bear with it…

- Dinner maybe bbq, activity to plan when the camp is confirm

- If the fund that we have is not enough maybe we can merge with other SHG centre to camp tgt

Tis the season to go down memory lane.... Haha!!

For me, I also started to serve in Punggol SHG when I was in JC. It has been such a rountine that almost is like brushing your teeth every morning. Just imagine that there are kids from this programme that are already married!!

1994 - Well, my first batch of kids!! I was taking the "girls" class with my JC fren who took me into the programme. I was real camera shy, so you wont see my face in most pics taken, haha!! One of them is Auntie Lily's daugther.

1995 & 1996 - March Camps, this camps are solely for Punggolians to bond before the programme starts.
1997 - 1998 - I was more adhoc, as I started my university studies. Sometimes helping Auntie Lily at the counter!
1999 - 2000 Here comes weiyu!! The Graduation Ceremonies!!

2001 - More Graduation Ceremonies!!

The rest til now, another time bah! Sleepy already!!
Hey everyone, let me add on to the memory lane!

In these 3 to 4 years, I have learnt alot and the weekly 3hrs spent on saturday allows me to get away from stress and all for a moment especially during my A levels year. It really provides me a place to let down my hair. I have gained happiness here and met new friends, this of course includes all of you who are reading this blog :)

Life is but a journey, so we shall all enjoy every little moments we share.

It's a rainy day today! It started raining very heavily when the kids were out playing volleyball and they had to stop and switch to captain's ball at the void deck. Aniways, think they had fun after 1+ hr of doing academic work. (:
Soon, 2 weeks from now, our p6s will be having their prelims and then PSLE will be coming up real quickly. Really do hope that they do well and move on to a good school. And hopefully, they will still come back after this year!
Sorry guys, not IT savvy and no photoshop cant piece all the photos together. The borders are realy preety though thx to huiyi and her sis.
result of the volley ball match:
team B 6 - teamD 4
teamD 4 - teamC 4

classmates...(after fyp presentation)
bros that bear wit the pain of fyp tgt...

Is really busy last few weeks as really have no time for other activity but I will never fail to visit SHG blog daily. FINALLY, my FYP project(STRESS) is over… is not a smooth and easy journey but I am glad that it is over and I think that I can at least a pass grade. As I always tell myself that “No matter how nasty and nice the problem I have faced with today, I’m really glad that it’s over and all I have to do is to prepare for the start of tomorrow…”

Now finally have more time to plan for SHG program and in charge of volley ball competition in the SHG activity. Currently thinking of having an inter-SHG-captain ball competition with other centre, as from what I have know is that most of the centre kids prefer ball game such as captain ball. Maybe it is an outdoor game and it involve some interaction and communication within their teammate and volunteer therefore the game seen to be much more interesting compare to others ball game. Moreover, they have also learnt some ball games skill, rule, respect and other personal character building skill.

Volunteers’ night to me is a night where the entire volunteers go to a dinner in order to bond, gather, and interact together. As it only happen once in a two year therefore sometime we really hardly see other centre volunteer when we are busy on our work. Volunteers’ night is also a night where good volunteers and long service volunteer get rewarded. Really RESPECT some of the long service volunteers as can see their effort put in the SHG program in order to let this program grow with the kids… The dinner is okay, early bird program is GREAT! (Ice cream is okay but the tarrot card is accurate in my opinion as I ask for my relationship thingy…as I dun think that I need explain in detail.. HAHA) In the dinner also talk to some of my old friend knows in the SHG camp and B3 but most of the time I stay on my table because is not really feeling well that day…

After volunteers’ night doing some reflection… look back at my time when I am a student in SHG till now as a volunteer… I have a song that from my bottom of my heart…

Josh Groban - You Raise Me Up

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

There is no life - no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

You raise me up... To more than I can be.

As most of u guys know, the volunteers' night has been over for close to 4 days and u guys have been given a short brief discription of wats going down. Let me, Clark Kent, give u the low down on wats going on.

Let me take u back a few days ago...To the day when we had SHG in the afternoon..

But first of all, please pardon me if I have misspelled yr name.

As usual, Hui Yi walking around, runing the show, keeping everything in check. Kathy teaching the young teens in one of the small classrooms adjacent to the "meetingroom-like" classroom. Very teacher-ish..the poker face..the endless flow of words and knowledge flowing out of her mouth like a never ending stream. The young teens, absorbing every single thing that she teachers like a sponge to water. Yue Bao with Xing Yi (forgot her name...sorry~!!!) teaching the young ladies and gents Maths. With the help if Wei Yu and Ee Ling, the class went as smooth as silk and I'm sure every student understood everything that was suppose to b though. Mr Loh behind the counter with Auntie Lily, both working hard behind the screen with their stern faces. Jiajin, who came in late(hai yo....), had to teach the sec 2 lady and gents english. After marking their work, it looks like the sec 2s need to improve on the English. No kidding. Anyway, as SHG ended early due to the volunteers' night, we slowly made our way down to Jurong. Which I'm sure was a pain in the A** for most of everyone. So on the way down, most were quiet, others were talking to each other. Wei Yu made a bet with Jiajin that if he gets 1 girl's number within 3 tries, he'll buy him a drink. So Jiajin had his first try on the train. Didn't work out.

I'm gonna skip the boring parts as the train ride was real torture for someone who can fly... ;-) So when we reached Jurong, we went to McDonald's to have a drink b4 heading to The Cheverons. After drinks, we headed in the direction of The Cheverons and we bumped into other SHG groups from different places. Not knowing how to go, Jiajin went to ask the Really Really tall lady how to go there. So apparently, we can hitch a ride to IMM via the feeder bus or we can walk there. So thinking that the bus will b crowded, we walked and so did the other groups. The Cheverons actually looks kinda far, but its really close. About a 10 minute walk.

Upon reaching, we were greeted by some organisers. Whom escorted us up to the place which was at 3rd floor. There were quite a few stalls, one with free photo shoots, free ice cream, free tea tasting, free tarrot card reading and free balloon sculpting. So we walked around the place, scaning and soaping up the atmosphere, which is kinda hot...literally...hahaha. So while some of us parted for awhile as some wanted ice cream and some were resgistering for the dinner, Jiajin bumped into some friends...really old ones. So he left. If memory does serve me correctly, Ee Leng, Hui Yi and Kathy were queing for ice cream while Mr Loh and Wei Yu were registering and queing for the free tarrot card reading.

Once inside, everyone met up again at Table 48 and dinner started shortly. The food was sumptous and filling...so were the performances from MINDS. So as the prize presentation was going on, nothing much was going and everyone was quietly sitting watching and clapping. Jiajin was getting too restless with the crowd so he went miggling around while the rest were taking photos. Thats y u can only see him in only 1 photo..hahaha~...Anyway, as I'm putting up in Jiajin's house, the least thing I could do is to take care of him..make sure he doesn't get into trouble. So from here on, I'll give u an account on wat he saw and did.

As he left the table to look for someone whom performed magic with him a few years back, a lady by the name of Tracy stopped him. As they met previously at a rock climbing session, they exchanged numbers and he left and continued searching. When he found the magician, he sat downa and chatted abit and noticed a lady who caught his eye earlier on the way into the function room, he borrowed a deck of cards from one of the magician's friend and went to perform a few card tricks as an excuse to get to know her. At the end of the performance, he asked for the girl's number and she gave. As the place was really noise, I didn't quite catch her name. If not, I would have said it. hehehe...Anyway, getting back, shortly after getting back to his table, he heard a familiar song, it was Eric Clapton's Change The World. He rose his hand in excitement as it was a nice song by a very famous guitarist. Turns out, it was a Guess-A-Song game and in the end, he went up to stage to answer. Turns out, he had to sing. Knowing Jiajin, he's got stage-fright. He more or less froze like a statue. But a while later, he started singing. Then after a verse, he ran down. Miggled around again and it was the end of the dinner.

As time flew by, the dinner was great. We all took a "family photo", did a nice loud YUM SENG and left shortly. We had out transport arranged by Hui Yi and I'm sure nothing was going to happen, I flew home and waited for Jiajin back at home.

I hope that u guys who have read this entry enjoyed it. And congradulations, u have made it to the finishing line...haha~...Ciao for now.... =-)

P.S: I've heard that some of u guys are dying...well, not dying but want to know who am I. I'm Mr. Loh. ;-)

Volunteers' Night 2008
Today's SHG session was shorter than usual and the kids didnt have the time for outdoor activities. Outdoor volleyball competition is going to start officially next week! Which team will emerge as the ultimate winner?! Well, stay tuned to find out :)
Following the SHG session, the volunteers headed for a short snack at macs after a 1+ hr mrt ride. The biannual Volunteers' Night 2008 was held at The Cheverons, quite a nice place i must say. As we were early, a couple of us went to have a tarrot card consultation. Interesting. New Zealands icecream was gd too.
The dinner proceeded with a couple of performances put up by MINDS as well as the award presentation as an appreciation to volunteers who committed for more than 5 years!
It was a gd time to see how far all the volunteers have come and how the little things done have impacted others' lives greatly.
